Plantation Shutters in the Southern Highlands — Built for Highlands Weather
The Southern Highlands does something to a home that no other part of NSW quite manages — it makes you think harder about the windows. The winters are real. The heritage streetscapes are full of homes that were built long before double glazing. And the houses that look beautiful in Bowral in May can feel cold by August if the windows aren't dressed properly.
Highland Shutters has been designing, and installing plantation shutters across the Southern Highlands since 2016. From Picton up to Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Berrima, Bundanoon, Exeter and Marulan — we come to your home with the samples, take proper measurements, and aim to send you an itemised quote within 24 hours.
Why Southern Highlands homes love plantation shutters
If you've ever spent a winter in a Bowral cottage, you know the windows are doing a lot of work. Most Southern Highlands homes have either original-architecture features that need to be respected, or substantial windows that let the cold in around the edges.
Plantation shutters do three things at once in the Highlands:
-
They insulate old single-pane glass against cold mornings and frosty nights.
-
They tilt so you can manage privacy while still letting the afternoon sun in during winter.
-
They frame the view — Bowral gardens, the Bowral courthouse trees, Moss Vale outlooks — without losing the line of the window.
In summer, when the western sun hits hard across Mittagong and Berrima, shutters cut the glare without making the room cave-dark. They keep working all year.
What we install in the Southern Highlands
We work with three shutter materials. We'll talk through which is right for your room when we visit.
Polymer (PVC) shutters — best for bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and any room that runs humid. They look like painted timber, they don't warp or crack, and they're easy to clean.
Basswood timber shutters — the classic choice. What we install in most heritage and family homes across the Highlands. They take a primer and paint to whatever colour suits your existing trim, and they're properly warm-looking.
Aluminium shutters — the outside option. Patios, outdoor entertaining areas, anywhere the shutters take weather. They're our strongest material.
How long do they take?
Lead time on shutters is 8-10 weeks because each one is manufactured to your exact window sizes. There's no off-the-shelf size that fits a Berrima cottage window the same way it fits a 2014-vintage Bargo build. The wait is part of the craftsmanship — it's why our shutters fit like they were always there.
Cost and finance
Every window is different, so we don't put prices online. If you'd like to spread the cost, humm90 gives you interest-free weekly or fortnightly payments from about $42 a week depending on the size of the project.
The shutters carry a 5-year paint warranty and a 15-year structural warranty.
What our Southern Highlands customers tell us
"Our Bowral cottage had original single-pane windows and we needed to keep that look. Highland Shutters came out, listened to what we wanted, and the shutters were barely visible when they're open — it's exactly what we hoped for." — Margaret, Bowral
